About the Artist
Binod Maharana, a distinguished master of traditional Pattachitra painting and palm-leaf engraving from Puri, Odisha. Belonging to the historic Chitrakara Sahi community, his artistic journey is deeply rooted in generations of ritualistic art associated with the Shree Jagannath Temple.
He began practicing Pattachitra at a young age under the guidance of his grandfather and gradually developed a distinctive style that blends traditional techniques with influences from temple sculptures and murals. His works are known for their intricate detailing, disciplined linework, and rich narrative depth, often drawing inspiration from Lord Jagannath, the Ramayana, and the Gita Govinda.
Over a career spanning decades, he has received numerous prestigious honours, including the National Award (1974), Vishwakarma Award (1983), Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1983) and the Padma Shri in recognition of his exceptional contribution to Indian traditional art. His works are part of prominent collections in India and abroad.
